The Geiger–Marsden experiments (also called the Rutherford gold foil experiment) were a landmark series of experiments by which scientists discovered that every atom has a nucleus where all of its positive charge and most of its mass are concentrated.
I ask students to take five minutes tonight to view the diagrams and read about Rutherford's experiment on pages 72-73 of their Modern Chemistry text, paying special attention to figures 3-6 and 3-7. Before students leave I collect the data sheet from each table to review and assess the group discussions. Rutherford fired tiny alpha particles at solid objects such as gold foil. He found that while most of the alpha particles passed right through the gold foil, a small number of alpha particles passed through at an angle (as if they had bumped up against something) and some bounced straight back like a tennis ball hitting a wall.
